Residential Rain Garden
Project Description
This homeowner came to us after repeated heavy rainstorms left standing water across the front yard. Rather than continuing to fight the site’s natural drainage patterns, we designed a landscape that would work with the water.
A large section of lawn was removed and reshaped into a rain garden designed to capture runoff, temporarily hold it, and allow it to slowly soak into the soil. We filled the garden with moisture-tolerant native plants arranged in sweeping drifts that will provide seasonal color, structure, and habitat as they mature.
Along the driveway, we installed a rock swale to help guide and absorb runoff while creating a clean transition between the garden and the pavement. The stone also provides an infiltration area where traditional mulch would have been vulnerable to washing away during heavy storms.
Rain Garden Efficiency
Just four months after installation, the rain garden is already working successfully. Water that once collected across the lawn is now being captured and absorbed within the landscape. As the plants continue to establish and fill in, this young garden will become even more effective, and increasingly vibrant, with each growing season.

We designed a three-zoned ponding depth for water coming in from driveway and foundation.
The garden design included native plants that would soak up excess water while creating seasonal interest with different colors and blooms.
The turfgrass was removed along with 13 yards of soil that was replaced with a high sand ratio/compost mix to allow for better drainage.
